Transplant duo face a big year
Ready for the challenge:

Alex Walker and Kate Knox with their invitation to complete in the World Transplant Games in Sweden

RUNNERS Kate Knox and Alex Walker are preparing for two life-changing events in their lives – the World Transplant Games and their wedding. The couple, who live in Goldfinch Close, Faversham, met in Canada at a World Transplant Games in 2005 and have just got engaged.
They have an impressive haul of medals between them and are excited about running in next year's championships. Alex, 42, who had a heart transplant in 1987, has competed in the Games since 1991.

The championships in Sweden next year will mark the fourth appearance for Kate, 33, who had a liver transplant in 1996. Both compete in the 400-metre, 800-metre and 1,500-metre disciplines, and are members of the 4 by 400-metre teams.

Alex has won a gold medal in the relay at every Games he has competed in, but is still striving for an individual gold.
He considers his proudest moment to be winning his first individual National British Transplant Games gold medal at Crystal Palace in 1991, just three years after his transplant. Amazingly, Kate did not run competitively until after her transplant, but has since achieved at a startling rate. She is currently holds the world women's 800-metre and 4 by 400-metre relay for people who have had transplants.
She balances her training with her job working in science labs for Pfizer.

Kate said: "It is a great honour to represent your country at anything, but especially in this arena, to prove how healthy we are thanks to the generosity of others. It is a privilege." Alex said: "It is so important for us to demonstrate to the world how successful transplants are. "The best way has to be through sport.
Look at what we can do! Without a transplant, we would either have been very ill – or dead. But thanks to the donor card and hospitals and surgeons, we are showing that a transplant is not a prolonging of being ill." Both Alex and Kate have check-ups and are on medication, but they are fit and well, training five times a week, including three running sessions.
Do they argue? Alex said: "We are very competitive. She has her world individual gold medals and I don't! I'm envious, but it is nice to have someone to train with, compete against and relate to." The couple – who have yet to set a wedding date – will compete against the best from 55 countries at the Games. Before that, they each need to raise £1,000 for training and travel costs in the run-up to the tournament.

17th World Transplant Games 2009 – Gold Coast Australia
Despite the great concerns before the Games about the effect of the swine flu, we are happy to report that all went well and the Games were enjoyed by all.  The number of countries attending was reduced unfortunately but we were delighted with the number of participants and supporters.  United Arab Emirates attended for the first time and we hope to welcome a bigger team from that country at the next Games.

WTGF General Assembly and Council Elections 2009
We welcome newly elected Councillors Peter Kreilkamp from Germany, Chris Thomas from Australia and Colin White from Ireland and we welcome the return of Gary Green, Nico Zonneveld and Daryl Wall. Sadly, Judit Berente of Hungary was not re-elected but we thank her and Jukka Nurmi from Finland for their years of service.
At the first Council meeting after the General Assembly the Councillors re-elected Gary Green as General Secretary and Nico Zonneveld as Treasurer.
We look forward to working with all new and existing Councillors who represent all our member countries.

Website and Forum
The WTGF websitewww.wtgf.org – is full of information, reports, photos and member country news. Each member country has its own page – currently 21 countries have taken advantage of this and have put their news and photos on our site.  Training and support are available from WTGF office if you are not confident – please contact wtgf@wtgf.org for instructions on how to get started.  We would like all our members to have at least a link to their own sites on their country pages.
Result of the latest Forum Discussion
We asked you to contribute recently to a discussion regarding the WTGF slogan ‘Organ Gift – Life Gift’ and at the deadline, we have only received contributions from 5 countries which is disappointing but we have to say thank you to those countries that did respond.  The suggestions were very interesting and could lead to further discussion but sadly we do not have the opinion of a sufficient number of our member countries in order to allow us to consider changing our slogan at this stage.
For your information, the following is a selection of the suggestions which were made:-

‘Celebrating New Life through Sport’
Celebrating Life through Sport’
‘Organ donation brings life to Sport’
‘Organ donation brings sport to life’
‘Give life to others’
‘Give life, be a donor’
‘The New Life Games’
‘Organ donation – Life Gift’
‘Organ donors give life to Sport’

One country suggested that we keep the slogan as it is – Organ Gift – Life Gift’
If you think you can improve on any of these suggestions, we would still like to hear from you  – wtgf@wtgf.org
